Saturn in Libra

The big news on the Astrology Radar is Saturn moving into Libra at the end of October. Saturn is the planet of limitation, form and commitment, and Libra – the sign of “The Other” – rules partnership, balance and justice. When they connect, we are in for some deep internal realignment and the place we can most expect to meet the pressure of Saturn is in our relationships.

Relationships are freakin’ hard; I see my own control issues and my own relentless need for love manifested on a daily basis as I parent my three year old daughter. In “the other” – our lover, our children, our spouse or our friends – we often come face to face with whatever we most desire to be and what we don’t like about ourselves. With Saturn in Libra, we have to acknowledge our own flaws and short-comings so we don’t project them onto others. We must also begin to claim our own beauty. Undertaking an “inner marriage,” where the self is fully acknowledged and accepted, builds more equitable and fulfilling relationships with others. We begin to see others for exactly who they are instead of seeing them through the lens of projection and unexpressed longing. All of this work takes commitment, which is a favorite word of Saturn.

As Saturn makes this move, it also enters into a transit with Pluto called a waning square. These planets opposed each other from the summer of 2001 through 2002, which you may recall as a tumultuous time. Now we must bring in new information to bring this Saturn-Pluto cycle into completion. We could speculate that some movement will happen in regard to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the so-called “War on Terror” around the globe. With Pluto involved, there is also an emphasis on nuclear power and weapons. Things might look incredibly worse before they look better, but the ultimate goal is to bring a chapter of American violence to a close.

So, what is the Saturn-Pluto combo moving toward completion in our personal lives?

I believe it could be another kind of “war on terror.” Forgive me for taking this metaphor even further, but it is time to employ our weapons against fear itself, to discover how we can end terror in our own lives. This has personal as well as global ramifications, for it is from the experience of terror that more terror is born: the young man whose brother is brutally murdered by authorities and takes up violence in retaliation; the woman in poverty who sells her body for drugs; the person raised in abuse who becomes the dog fight organizer in adulthood.

These examples are extreme – and maybe even cliché – but they help us understand how even the small abuses we face can lead to the desire for control over our lives and how this gives us a distorted view of power.

Where are you terrified? What makes you quake with fear? This Pluto-Saturn square means that we will probably come face to face with whatever scares the pants off of us. We have a choice here though. We can let terror rule our lives, or we can surrender and open our hearts even more in the face of overwhelming fear, finding the courage to recover and survive.

Opening our hearts when we are full of fear is no small feat. Our bodies are hard-wired to respond to fear in the old fashioned way: fight or flight. This instinctive response has served us incredibly well throughout our evolutionary struggle. But now the stage is changing, and we have to change our automatic responses. Uranus, the pattern breaker, brings in the possibility of this change. Uranus in Pisces brings a new depth of awareness for the unity and oneness we can feel with all of life, in both joy and suffering. Here are some practices to employ during the Autumn to cultivate this new awareness:

·         Loving-kindness meditation: This Buddhist practice builds unconditional love for all beings. It was first taught as an antidote to fear. (Here’s a link that offers a guide to the practice: http://www.contemplativemind.org/practices/subnav/kindness.htm)

·         Shadow work: Look at your core issues – control, co-dependency, self-sabotage. Whatever they are, it is time to acknowledge, accept, and transform the shadow within. While we don’t want to lash out instinctually, it’s just as dangerous to ignore these powerful drives.

·         Cultivating peace within: Overthrow the dictators within yourself in order to overthrow the external ones. How do you govern yourself? With fear and coercion or with love and cooperation?

The old strategies simply will not work anymore. The message from the cosmos is “Embrace the strange and unusual.” Ask yourself how you could use unconventional tools for your own self-improvement and evolutionary unfolding.

Lessons in Virgo and Libra

“The highest, most decisive experience is to be alone with one’s own self. You must be alone to find out what supports you when you find that you cannot support yourself. Only this experience can give you an indestructible foundation.”
~Carl Jung

It is worthwhile to revisit the lessons of Saturn in Virgo before we prepare for its entry into Libra’s terrain. When Saturn goes retrograde in January, it will travel back into Virgo from April to July, and this time will give us another chance to wrap-up our personal Virgo lessons.

Saturn is probably my most-watched planet. Saturn’s role is of vital important to anyone striving to bring more intention and consciousness into their daily lives, anyone who dares to ask “What am I doing here anyway?” It is the gatekeeper between the personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Sun and Moon) and the transpersonal planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto), and as such it is a kind of initiator that pushes us past mundane reality into deeper spiritual truths – and back again. When Saturn changes signs – which happens every 2 ½ years – it is an opportunity to assess and reflect on what we’re doing here anyway, to check in and see if our life circumstances match our inner reality. Saturn asks us whether we are serving our essential nature with our various responsibilities such as jobs, families, projects and health.

Saturn in Virgo takes this notion of self-reflection and integration to a whole new level. Do your daily activities honor your deeper self? Are you managing your time well – making enough space for what feeds and sustains you physically as well as creatively and spiritually? Conversely, filling your time with endless activities in an effort to validate your existence might be keeping you from some good, old-fashioned soul searching. Virgo asks, “Are you afraid of being alone?”

Saturn in Virgo would have us making decisions based on what aligns us with a higher purpose, and we discover this purpose most often through periods of solitude and introspection. Saturn invites us to peel back the layers of the visible world in order to discover this purpose. Virgo’s symbol is after all “the Virgin,” known to our ancestors as the sovereign one whose self-knowledge enables her to tap into a wisdom that serves the community with healing, nourishment and sacred rites. As Saturn moves through the last degrees of Virgo, it’s a good time to reflect not only on your daily schedule and how you organize your life, but also on how you are called to serve. It might be wise to write an intention for your life, a personal mission statement that can guide your daily decision-making.

As we move from Virgo to Libra we reach the midway point in the zodiac, where our focus shifts from the personal to the collective. Aries through Virgo seeks to assert, build and integrate the personality and will of the individual. Libra through Pisces concerns itself with how all these individuals can work together. So as Saturn bridges these two spheres, we begin to think about who we are in relationship to others – the roles we take on as lovers, parents, children, co-workers and community members.

Saturn in Libra tugs at our desires and fears of commitment, a subject we will be more aware of during the next 2 ½ years. As a co-worker of the infinitely creative universe, we can choose to get serious about building healthy affection and healthy boundaries with “the Other.” Begin thinking about how you feel about commitment and how you relate to the people in your life. Do you find yourself in the role of caretaker? Do you count on your significant others to give you a secure sense of self? Releasing these old patterns of relating can open you to a more authentic awareness of yourself and others.

Another important facet of Venus-ruled Libra is the domain of Beauty and Art. We could ride the upcoming energies to imbue our worlds with more creativity, loveliness and balance by invoking the spirit of Libra in all that we do. As astrologer Caroline Casey has often pointed out, the Balinese are known for their amazing arts and crafts, but they will tell you, “We have no art. We simply do everything as beautifully as possible.” Let’s make this saying a model for our own lives as we tango into the Saturn in Libra world.
